Separating fact from fiction
Orthodontics has come a long way, but a few outdated ideas still stick around. Here's what's actually true.
Myth 1: Braces are only for kids. Adults make up a significant share of orthodontic patients today, and treatment works just as well at any age with healthy teeth and gums.
Myth 2: Straight teeth are just cosmetic. A properly aligned bite also affects chewing efficiency, speech, and can reduce uneven wear on teeth over time.
Myth 3: Treatment always takes years. Depending on the case, some plans wrap up in under a year, especially with modern aligner technology.
Myth 4: Braces are painful the whole time. There's typically some soreness after adjustments for a day or two, but it isn't constant throughout treatment.
Myth 5: Any dentist can do orthodontic work as well as a specialist. Orthodontists complete additional years of focused training specifically on tooth movement and bite mechanics.
Knowing the facts makes it easier to decide when — and whether — treatment is right for you.
